Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution

Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translator' Revolution , or as we will call it for the remainder of this review. just Babel , was nothing short of extraordinary. I am not the biggest fan of any book that deals a lot with political and social issues, or that is too long, or, when the books are meant to be a fantasy book it has minimal to no fantasy elements until close to the end. And yet, once I started reading this one it was impossible to stop. Are you a lover of languages? There is no doubt in my mind that the author spent hours, days, months, if not years researching the many intricacies of languages and translation. I love the study of languages. I am fluent in two, understand somewhat two others, and have studied a dead language (ancient Greek) at university. So needless to say, I was geeking out with the author throughout the whole book. I honestly do not believe this book will suit everyone, if you are not a lover of languages you might ...

Quickies, April 2021

I read a good amount of older releases this past two months. I will not write long individual reviews for every single one of them but here are is a little bit about each one of them:  - Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh It's unlikely I will ever dislike something Nalini writes. She is a master of her craft. This is the second book in the Psy-Changeling series and it is just as good as the first. Shy and isolated Faith is plagued by visions of blood and murder. She has questions and needs help but can't ask those around her. She turns to the changelings and the only Psy she knows that has defied her race (first book in the series). Vaughn is more cat than human but has to control his instincts not to scare Faith away. This was a fabulous paranormal romance read but you really must read the first book first! 4 stars from me :)  - Desperate Measures by Katee Robert Desperate Measures is the story of Jafar and Jasmine. But if you read Katee before you know it is not that simple at...

Namesake (Fable #2) by Adrienne Young

Trader. Fighter. Survivor. With the Marigold ship free of her father, Fable and its crew were set to start over. That freedom is short-lived when she becomes a pawn in a notorious thug’s scheme. In order to get to her intended destination she must help him to secure a partnership with Holland, a powerful gem trader who is more than she seems. As Fable descends deeper into a world of betrayal and deception she learns that her mother was keeping secrets, and those secrets are now putting the people Fable cares about in danger. If Fable is going to save them then she must risk everything, including the boy she loves and the home she has finally found. The Review: 4 Stars I enjoyed Namesake  a lot more than I enjoyed the first book in the series, Fable.  Overall the book had a much better pacing. I remember complaining that although I liked Fable  it lagged at times, but that really wasn't an issue here. There was a twist coming or something about to happen at all times, and ...

The Gilded Ones (Deathless #1) by Namina Forna

There was a time where I loved nothing more than a good YA fantasy. I guess that time is passed... either that or the quality of YA books coming out has fallen. This wasn't a bad book, it just was underwhelming . It has a very good concept, a good start, a good climax point, but everything else felt flat. Deka leaves in fear of the Blood Ceremony Day- the day she finds out if her blood runs pure (red) or if she has gold blood, which is met with a death sentence. Needless to say, her blood runs gold. She is killed again and again just to wake, limbs reattaching themselves... It is a gory and interesting start. I was intrigued as to what she was and where this was going.  Someone from the capital comes an offers her a deal: fight for the emperor with other girls like her or stay at the village being killed until someone figures out how to give her her true death. Let's face it, it is an easy choice.  The book celebrates female friendships, sisterhood! Families from circumstance ...

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Victoria Schwab is an acclaimed fantasy writer for a reason, she writes gold! Or the closes thing you can get to it in literature form :) 5 Glorious Stars

Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse [arc/alc review]

October, the month to read mysteries, horror, and suspense... but how about a fantasy novel with a little bit of all of the above? That is definitely my preference and New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn , Rebecca Roanhorse, wrote just the right book. Inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas, full of magic, intrigue, and prophecies, Black Sun  will keep you on your toes.  The very first few pages of Black Sun  will certainly give you Halloween vibes. A mother that carves out her own son's eyes? ouch. But if that is a little too much for you don't let it deter you from reading it, not many scenes that gory and there is a much bigger reason and purpose for it. And the boy, Serapio, grows up to become fearless, a vessel for the gods, and easily the most powerful character in the book. The story is centered and told from the perspective of four different characters. As the story unfolds their lives and fates intertwine. The fi...

Fable (Fable #1) by Adrienne Young, 3 Stars

Adrienne Young's book  Sky in the Deep   was no doubt one of my all time favorite young adult fantasy stand alone books. Sadly, the book she wrote immediately after that was one of my biggest disappointments. So I really didn't know what to expect of this one. The premise sounded good. The blurb was promising. And in the end, I would say it delivered. It wasn't as amazing as her first book, but it wasn't bad and I am actually looking forward to the next one.  As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her...

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games #0) by Suzanne Collins

This prequel of the beloved Hunger Games trilogy is absolutely fantastic. This story has the ability to be read as a stand alone, as you do not need previous knowledge of the original three books. However, it does give insight to situations and reactions in the trilogy. This book makes you sympathize with the loathsome antagonist from the main series, President Snow.  The plot follows orphaned Coriolanus Snow as an eighteen year old about to graduate from the capitol's academy. Him and twenty-three other classmates are chosen to participate as the first ever mentors to the tributes in the games. As it is announced who was assigned to what district and what gender. Snow is assigned the district twelve girl-- which he perceives as a personal insult due ...

Darkdawn (The Nevernight Chronicle #3) by Jay Kristoff

I will forever have a special place in my heart for Nevernight and Godsgrave. Darkdawn ? Not so much... This last book doesn't even compare in quality to its predecessors.  Nevernight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Godsgrave ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Darkdawn ⭐️⭐️

The Beautiful (The Beautiful #1) by Renée Ahdieh [arc review]

Do you remember when cheesy vampire books were popular in the Young Adult world? Well, I don't know if Renee Ahdieh will successfully bring that back or not, but that is exactly what this book was!

Pestilence (The Four Horsemen #1) by Laura Thalassa

This book had been sitting on my kindle for a while, and now that the second one was released - War - I thought it was time to stop procrastinating and read it. I am glad I did :) Blurb: They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all. When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.  Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.  And now,...

Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin [arc review]

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn The romance was beautiful. The rest needed some work...

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson [arc review]

“Knowledge always has the potential to be dangerous. It is a more powerful weapon than any sword or spell.” What a delightful read! Margaret Rogerson left me with a smile at the end of   An Enchantment of Ravens   and yet again here. This was a nice sweet read for fans of easy read young adult fantasies. Although very different than  her first book it still carries the same light hearted style of writing.

The Rose (The Red #2) by Tiffany Reisz [arc review]

Adult content   Greek Mythology meets Romance and Erotica! I wasn't sure what to expect but boy did it delivered. I loved everything about it. “There is no shame in wanting to live inside your favorite stories.”

Bloodleaf (Bloodleaf #1) by Crystal Smith [arc review]

@glimpses_of_my_books Do you ever go into a book completely blind? I almost never do that these days, specially when it comes to Young Adult books. But... blind into it I went. I read the blurb after I had started the book and I have no regrets. Outside of romance YA Fantasy is a favorite genre of mine and I would have picked this one out regardless.

The Shadowglass (The Bone Witch #3) by Rin Chupeco [arc review]

Whenever you really love a series it is really difficult to write a review for the last book. It is no different here. I stumbled upon The Bone Witch by accident when the arcs were first going out and the second I finished the book I requested an arc for the second one. I really enjoyed the book.  The second book ,  The Hear Forger , is going to be one of my favorite YA fantasy reads for a long time still. I reread my favorite passages before diving into the last one, had to be done. And so, it is with a heavy heart I say goodbye to The Bone Witch series.

Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass #7) by Sarah J. Maas

That was a beast of a book! I don't even remember last time it took me a week to finish a book (or last time I touched a book that long). Did I love Kingdom of Ash? Yes, I did! But was it without fault? Not at all. There were a lot of things that annoyed me. It was a good ending, but it won't be the book I will remember from the series in a few years time. It was a well written book while at the same time being forgetful... anyway... lets get on with this blurb and review shall we?

Empire of Sand (The Books of Ambha #1) by Tasha Suri [ARC Review]

Empire Of Sand was a wonderful surprise. It reminded me of Renee Ahdieh and Rin Chupeco's writing styles. There is this almost poetic flow to it that I absolutely love.  Tasha Suri's Empire of Sand managed to be richly descriptive while at the same time a fast paced story. I cannot recommend this enough to all YA Fantasy lovers out there!

Twice Dead (The Necromancer's Song #1) by Caitlin Seal [arc review]

This was such a refreshing Young Adult read. I haven't been reading much YA lately because I got tired of the same story been told again and again, so when I read the blurb for Twice Dead a few months ago I was excited. And it did not disappoint!

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven [arc review]

This was nice and well done fantasy romance. It was my first time reading anything by Grace Draven and I enjoyed it. The romance takes a little while to get going but it is worth it when it does!
